As Art Santa Fe looks toward its 24th edition, we are pleased to announce this years recipients of the Spotlight Award. Each artist recognized for their creativity, as well as unique and forward-looking works of art.

Art Santa Fe 2024 will once again have an interesting mix of 80+ exhibiting galleries, art dealers, and artists from across the globe, showcasing original work of hundreds of artists that includes prints, paintings, drawings, sculptures, photography, ceramics, giclees, lithographs and glass works, among other contemporary and fine art.

Originally from a large metropolitan area, Tracey Hewitt married a rancher and, like Lisa Douglas in Green Acres, said goodbye to city life.

But she never said goodbye to her art.

I wanted to talk with Tracey because every encounter I have ever had with her as a member of our Art Biz Success community has been positive. She is funny, warm, and generous. And she knows how to live life to its fullest.

Tracey helps run the family cattle business in the Australian bush, which takes up a good hunk of her time. (I had to look up bush to make sure I was using it properly. We in the States would probably call it farmland or the middle of nowhere.)

Aside from her duties on the ranch, Tracey is and always has been an artist, though the label of “artist” wasn’t easy for her to adopt—a hurdle I have discovered many artists must overcome.

About Rob Sherman

Robert Sherman is a native of Prescott Arizona. He is the third generation in his family to carry on a proud Southwestern silversmithing and lapidary tradition. Rob spent the first years of his professional life working to serve unhoused persons, then learning to repair and rebuild his beloved air-cooled Volkswagens before heeding the call of his artistic side. Rob hand fabricates and also casts (including tufa casting) in both sterling and gold to create his unique pieces—he also innovates with new methods to produce one-of-a-kind texture and design. Celebrating nature and imbuing his work with over seventy-five years of family tradition, each hand-crafted piece is meticulously designed and created. He uses upcycled sterling and gold to reduce his environmental impact. Rob chooses and cuts his own stones for each piece you see—traveling extensively to find stones, typically turquoise, that speak to him and has the most promising potential for exceptional beauty.

I currently reside in Kansas City, Missouri, but claim most of the South as home. It is “that” South that always seems to seep its way into my work. It is provocative but gentle, connecting us to personal memories through intimate and nostalgic amusement.

I want to strike a chord in people, permitting them to laugh at unpleasant memories or situations. With time, edges can be softened into warm recollections, whether it’s a bad hair day or a bad marriage.

My work is a collection of short stories. It shares messages from the perspective of different people who understand what it means to be a floundering mother, an awkward daughter, an exhausted housewife, a scorned lover, or someone who has been through hell and back.

Two of my collections have been displayed multiple times across the country. One is a series of paintings titled Southern Peculiar. The other is my collection of library card drawings titled A Permanent Record.

A Permanent Record is a series of paintings and drawings on vintage library borrower cards. These cards, some of which date back to the 1920s, are ephemera created only to perform a simple function. None were ever expected to retire from their first career and start a new life as a permanent guest on a collector’s wall.

I selected each card by searching through stacks of books that had been cast aside and long forgotten. The titles of these books bring to mind times when we lived inside their worlds for a bit, rooted for their characters, or wished we could be with them or be them.

It is a merging of art and literature, nostalgia and history, recycling and reusing. Each one is unique. The drawing relates to symbolism from the book or a play on words with the title. This project intends to open conversations between generations. It provokes discussions of the past and hopefully creates interest, introducing old titles to new readers.

I have also created numerous murals across the country. My 40-foot mural, “Suffragette,” in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, celebrates the 19th Amendment. It is dedicated to all women who have held office over the last century.

Since my early years, you could often find me absorbed in a canvas covered in paint or immersed in the pages of a book, learning something new. Fast forward to today, and my family will confirm that not much has changed. I’m still either passionately painting or indulging in mastering a new technique!

“Blue Daze” (triptych) sculpted resin on acrylic, 21″ x 72″ each

My artistic journey formally began when I graduated with Honors from the Art Institute of Philadelphia, armed with a degree in Graphic Design. Employed straight out of school, I dedicated many years to working in the field. However, in my late 20’s, a turning point led me to Texas. Here my art career took a backseat to the corporate world, while I focused on raising my family.

“Emerald Waves” (diptych) sculpted resin on acrylic, 18″ x 72″ each

Rediscovering my artistic side, I founded Brushworks Murals and later collaborated with a partner to found Artisan Studios. These businesses flourished into successful commission art and faux finishing companies, respectively, that thrived for the next 14 years.

Towards the end of my faux career, I learned about resin and was captivated by its potential. In my workshop, I dedicated hours to observing the interactions of different colorants and experimenting with various techniques, revealing the captivating one-of-a-kind effects that could be achieved through resin. This marked the beginning of my resin journey. As my initial small resin projects expanded into larger pieces, I began participating in art show circuits and eventually secured placements in stores and galleries.

Continuing my exploration of resin, I started experimenting with the timing of its crystallization process as the material transitions from a liquid to a solid state. It’s essential to understand the challenge of taking a self-leveling product and expect it to retain any kind of dimensional qualities. Through both trial and error, I discovered that different resins possess different strengths. Some withstood twisting, shaping, and molding, while others collapsed immediately.

Rather than accept defeat, I continued to push the limits, ultimately leading to the creation of my line of organically shaped resin vases. The mesmerizing effects of light bouncing off the pearlescent micas coloring the resin, and the captivating organic shapes left me inspired. I had to take this artistic exploration even further!

I began an ambitious journey of manipulating and sculpting large sheets of pearlescent resin. Despite the gratification of creating these gorgeous sheets of resin, I encountered a rather large hurdle. They lacked independent stability, and I could not get them off the table!

“Lakeview” sculpted resin on acrylic, 36″ x 46″

I teamed up with a young lady at an acrylic fabrication facility. We worked together on a solution, taking my creations to the next level. By strategically placing them on acrylic bases and incorporating concealed mounts and braces, we not only solved the stability issue, but also added a captivating dimensional element when displayed on the wall.

It was a turning point, marking the debut of my revolutionary series, Resin Impressions. A lively collection was born from the meticulous hand-sculpting of pearlescent resin. Join me as I continue exploring resin’s boundless possibilities in the journey ahead.

As a young girl growing up in India, I always found myself drawn to the vibrant colors in the fabrics and designs that surrounded me. I also took pleasure in reading and drawing in my spare time. However, it was the books on French impressionist paintings that my mother shared with me that profoundly influenced and ignited my passion for painting.

Your presence as the artist at a fair or festival is important, and what you do has a direct effect on sales. Keep these tips in mind for maximum engagement and increased sales.

Be present and accessible.

It’s surprising how often exhibitors aren’t present in their booths during festival hours. While sometimes this is unavoidable, more often than not, it’s due to artists feeling uncomfortable or stressed, leading them to socialize elsewhere or avoid interacting with the public. Working a show can indeed be stressful. Promoting your art or handmade work while trying to close sales is no easy feat. However, it’s essential to remember that you can’t sell anything if you’re not physically there.

If you’ve ever felt apprehensive about exhibiting or experienced anxiety in this environment, it’s crucial to confront those feelings head-on. Start by committing to being in your booth as much as possible and getting comfortable with that environment first. Converse with customers; don’t just hang back and hope your work sells itself.

Emphasize customer engagement.

The truth is, your personality, your story, and the connections you make with customers play a significant role in each sale. Collectors want to know about the artist behind the art, and people appreciate an engaging buying experience. So, make the effort to share your passion, and build those connections. It’s a vital part of the exhibiting experience.

The story you tell, the technique you explain, and the benefits you share, will be memorable to those who are interested in what you make. They will in turn share that information when showing others what they have purchased from you.

Even if it’s hard at first, take steps to improve your skills with customers. Make eye contact, speak about your work, and listen to them. Why are they at the festival? What do they enjoy about your art? What type of purchase are they considering? Are they interested in custom work, or would they like you to contact them after the show? The more you learn about your booth visitors, the more you can provide outstanding customer service, and the more opportunities you will have to close the sale.

Place the item in their hands.

This is a powerful nonverbal way to help your customer begin to feel a sense of ownership of the item they are considering. Touch is a vital key to making sales. Encourage them to feel the weight, texture, and quality of what you make. For wearable items, suggest they try on the piece with a mirror at hand so they can appreciate how your work looks and how it makes them feel.

Speak to the group.

Shoppers often attend festivals with friends and family. When you answer questions and speak with the shopper, be sure to include their companions, using eye contact and a smile to keep them in the loop, too.

Have you ever noticed that many times the friend who is present also makes a purchase? Don’t overlook this possibility. They might become an additional customer for you, or even be the one holding the credit card. Companions often have a huge influence on the shopper’s decision to buy, which is why acknowledging them and including them in your conversation is a good idea. When you show respect and acknowledge them, they know they are seen and heard, not ignored. Their positive response will help when they are asked their opinion about whether your customer should buy.

Know your selling points and how to deal with objections.

Do you know the reasons why people don’t buy your work? Sure you do. It’s too expensive, the wrong color, too heavy, or whatever. Listen to shoppers to hear their concerns so that you can understand why sales aren’t made, and then deal with those objections either before they happen or through overcoming them during the sales process.

Why should people buy your work? You must know the reasons why and be able to speak about them fluidly. You won’t just be rattling off a list of reasons, but instead be able to engage in meaningful conversation with shoppers who are considering a purchase. Each benefit of buying that you point out can alleviate their concerns and build their confidence. Helping people to make the right buying decision is actually a customer service. Do your best to make recommendations that will help your customer buy a piece of your work that is right for them.

Gather contact information.

People make a purchase when they are ready. Do they have a need for what you are selling? Can they afford it at this time? Do they have all the information they need to make the buying decision?

The art fair where you meet prospective customers is often just a starting point. They see your work and they like it. You share your story, and they get to know you. But they aren’t ready to buy just yet. Getting their names and contact info is essential, because it allows you to stay in touch and keep your work in front of them on an ongoing basis. Then, when the time comes that they are ready for the purchase, they will know you, trust you, and be more likely to purchase from you.

Don’t let your next fair or festival become a “single opportunity” to make sales. Use a guest book or collect their email address, or get their contact info electronically, or exchange business cards. Put them on your list and stay in touch. This one activity will result in making sales after the show, closing repeat sales, and gaining referrals to other new prospective customers.

Q: Introduce yourself — who are you and what is the vision of your gallery for artists?

A: I am Lucas Kokogian, founder and director of Galeria Azur. Our gallery’s vision is to serve as a platform for artists from diverse backgrounds to showcase their talents. We are committed to promoting inclusivity and equal opportunities in the art industry, believing that art should be accessible to everyone. Galeria Azur strives to create a space where emerging and mid-career artists can gain exposure and recognition.

Q: What is your background?

A: As a collector myself, I earned my spot in the art scene in Argentina by representing the greatest living artists. I opened Galería Azur in Buenos Aires in 2009. My connection with art started early – my family home was surrounded by art and antiques – and continued by approaching the artistic world from an academic perspective by studying Art History Management. After several years as a leader in Buenos Aires and Bogotá, I obtained peer respect and discernment and launched a career in the art auction world. Having established my reputation in the auction room, Galería Azur grew into the global network of galleries it is today.

Q: What is your work philosophy and how does that impact the gallery?

A: My work philosophy revolves around promoting inclusivity and equal opportunities in the art industry. This philosophy is deeply ingrained in Galeria Azur’s mission and operations. We strive to create a vibrant and diverse art community where artists from all backgrounds can thrive. My work ethic has been shaped by a combination of influences and experiences throughout my life. Inspired by my parents, I learned the values of hard work, dedication, and commitment. Q: What artist(s) inspire you?

A: I am inspired by artists who challenge boundaries and provoke thought through their work. Jon Gilchrist, one of the artists we represent inspires me every day. His personal odyssey transmutes into a visual symphony. His art—a mélange of abstract forms and bold colors—echoes the depth of his narrative. As a tall, young man navigating the complexities of identity as an African American individual in Houston, his canvases are replete with the emotional richness of his experiences. Works such as “Brave New World” and “Clearly Muddled Sky” transcend their titles, becoming emotional cartographies charting the terrain of his soul’s journey. He is constantly inviting the audience on a voyage of introspection.

I can sit here and name artists all day! Picasso inspires me as an artist for several reasons. Firstly, his unparalleled creativity and innovation in the realm of visual arts continue to astound and captivate me. Picasso’s ability to constantly push the boundaries of artistic expression, experimenting with various styles and techniques throughout his career, serves as a constant reminder of the limitless possibilities within the artistic process.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve received?

A: The best advice I’ve received is to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, to seek mentorship from those who have walked the path before me, and to continuously cultivate a clear vision for what I want to achieve.

Q: When you are not working, where can we find you?

My art stems from my lifelong love of travel. The encounters I have experienced meeting people, seeing new places and learning about new cultures has translated itself into photography, mixed media, and the ancient wax and dye resist painting process known as batik.

My interest in batik came from a visit to the African nation of Uganda when I was in high school. My mother and I were traveling with her friend. We visited her family, doctors working in a hospital for the National Institute of Health in Kampala hoping to find a cure for a form of cancer.

Her daughter traveled with us around the country on safari and took us to an exhibition of batik arts and crafts. When I returned home, I taught myself and my local Girl Scout troop about the batik process.

I later attended Morris County, New Jersey Vo-Tech to learn commercial art. This was followed by a degree in Graphic Design from Boston University.

After college graduation I briefly worked as an advertising artist for two suburban Boston newspapers. This led to a 30-year career in advertising sales for print, radio, TV, and public media. I retired to creating art full-time in 2011.

Since then, I have won many awards, taught batik workshops, and was accepted as a Master Silk Painter by Silk Painters International (SPIN). Several of my batik paintings are in public art collections around the state of Florida and I had a solo exhibition in the 22^nd floor art gallery in the Florida State Capitol building.

I’ve always been fascinated by all things Japanese, which resulted in two trips to Japan to participate in art workshops. I am particularly fond of indigo and using Japanese paper products in mixed media art pieces.

Denise Allen, one of this year’s Artexpo New York Spotlight Recipients. Get to know the artist below.

Q: Introduce yourself — who you are and what your vision as an artist is?

A: I was born to be a Artist but actually didn’t realize it until I was in my late 20s. I was born in Bedford Stuyvesant Brooklyn, New York on Mother’s Day. My mother was a beautiful quiet woman and a great Seamstress. Her mother was also a great seamstress.

As a child, I was blessed with dreams that transported me to a realm of wonder and mystery. In these dreams, I encountered ethereal black sillhouette images of pure-hearted Ethopian people. Their beauty, kindness, and purity of soul left an incredible mark on my young heart. 

One fateful day, as they approached me, I felt an overwhelming surge of love emanating from their presence. It was then that I realized their purpose.

Q: What is your work philosophy and how does that impact your work?

LOVE and supporting one another. With most of the money we made we were able to fund and support many people, non-profit profit organizations that help others that are down and out, poor folk in the street and the bowery and all kinds of people in dire need of help. Our aim for this upcoming distinguished show is that whatever sales we make 50 percent will go to a school in Ethiopia for the needy.

I honestly and truly love making story textile needlework art and paintings because in my heart I have so many stories full of love, peace, pain, tragedy, hate, and also stories of hope, faith, and taking risk. I know there will be other stories I’ll have to share. I want to share them through my love and gift of textile needleworked Folk Art. 

Q: What artist(s) inspire you?

A: The Artist whose work absolutely inspires me is the artist that I am collaborating with in this show. Teklemariam. 

Q: What is the best advice you’ve received?

A: The best advice I ever received was from the gallery owner who represented me many years ago. He was smart and experienced. He treated me very well and was the person who advanced my art career. 

Q: When you are not working, where can we find you?

A: When I’m not working you can find me working on my little 23-acre farm in upstate New York in Palatine Bridge. It’s an Old Fashioned 17th-century colonial agricultural hamlet. 

Q: What does exhibiting at Artexpo New York 2024 mean to you?

A: To be given the privilege and honor to participate in this important art fair is more than I hoped for. Unfortunately, my husband fell ill and for the past 8 years, I wasn’t able to do any art shows or events since he was basically bedbound and could no longer walk. He died 8 months ago. I love and miss him terribly. He retired 22 years ago from the Port Authority of NY & NJ. He was a Senior Draftsman there for 33 years. Our Son Richard Allen Jr. was killed in Tower 1 when the airplanes struck into the top of the towers. My beloved husband escaped by the skin of his teeth. He had to walk all the way home once he made it out. He served in the Army for six years after graduating from high school. He was given a Military Funeral with honors and respectively buried proudly and Honorably in Evergreen Cementary 10 minutes from where we live. God Bless you.
